Mrs. M motivation for helping at-risk children and youth stems from the vision to see them make something purposeful and long-lasting out of themselves. Currently, she is helping such kids in a small, beautiful rural village in Nigeria called Oduduma. After more than two decades, she continues to be motivated by the positive impact that the right education bestows to them, the community, and future generations.
The importance of education in a child’s life has been well documented. This is something she believes and goes a step further to make it more holistic. Sure, she can get kids into a classroom and teach them Mathematics and English, subjects that she is passionate about. However, if they are to understand, pass and make use of that knowledge, they need to be prepared physically, mentally, and emotionally.
As such, she strives to create an environment that supports them wholesomely. One that enables them to learn, laugh, and play like the kids they are while also effectively nurturing them into mature, proactive adults that they will grow into. One that imparts practical life skills that can be utilized for the rest of their lives – cleanliness, accountability, interpersonal skills, etc. A safe space that allows them to unburden and be heard. To promote their resilience in a way that brings them close to their purpose. To understand and appreciate their backgrounds and make something worthwhile rather than become victims. She hopes to help them become leaders in their lives and change-makers in their community.
Moreover, the support staff can benefit from the mentorship opportunities, in addition to honing their child-care skills, as well as gaining insights into running children and youth ministries.
In the end? An empowered Oduduma.
With God’s grace, she hopes to help everyone find their purpose – one that improves their quality of life.
